Let’s begin with an analogy. Gemma Townley is to Sophie Kinsella as Nicky Hilton is to Paris. Got it? Both Hilton sisters are attractive, thin and rich. Both are talented at self-promotion, designing things and being famous for er–being famous. Point is, one sister’s star shines brighter than the other.
Gemma Townley is a British Chick Lit writer and the lesser known sister of Sophie Kinsella (aka known as Madeline Wickham) of Shopaholic fame. While Sophie has strong face and name recognition many fans of chick lit barely know who Gemma Townley is, and that is despite the fact that she’s had seven novels published. Lauren Willig has written one of my very favorite fiction series called the Pink Carnation novels for short. The Secret History of the Pink Carnation is the first novel in the series. Don’t let the clever yet somewhat misleading covers fool you into believing these stories are your typical, run-of-the-mill historical ‘bodice rippers’.
I remember when the Pink Carnation first came out and I saw it lying on a table at my local Borders. I picked up the book because the cover picture was kind of interesting but since I don’t typically read ‘bodice rippers’, no matter how handsome the Native American warrior with the heaving chest may be, I sat the book down and made my way to Sophie Kinsella’s latest. I absolutely adore this chick lit/mystery series by Kyra Davis. I don’t normally read mysteries or novels where characters are murdered (unless it’s an espionage thriller of the Brad Thor or Vince Flynn variety) but the main character Sophie Katz is so cool and engaging that you are quickly drawn into her world.
